BUT first, I must offer you a premise: This work stems from an acknowledgement of self: who I was, who I am, and who I am becoming. In doing so, I become aware of my race and our struggle. It pains me, so much, because we have so much work to do...
That being said, without further ado, my STATE OF THE UNION
It's not enough to know anymore
WE gotta grow, and show we can soar
Sayin its his fault is lame
Its your fault you remain the same
Constantly fighting to be better than before
The ones before us have opened the door
It lies within us to carry on the dream
Sometimes it makes me want to scream
Watching generations behind me come up
Unaware of just how much they're given up
On dreams of yesterday. Shyt is crazy
Tired of hearin, they're just babies
Our tomorrow starts today
Instilling pride in our ancestry is the way
Sharing stories of Marcus Garvey, Douglass,
Fannie Lou Hamer and Chisholm to name a few
Freedom Fighters, Writers, Teachers, even YOU
We owe it to ourselves and our history
To be better than our current society
The woes of the oppressor
Knocking out our predecessor
And all that we've accomplished
I challenge you to acquire knowledge
Removing our history from the books
When's the last time you took a look?
Lynching ourselves daily is sad
Ignorance is bliss, its so bad
No one can better us but WE
Lifting as we climb, promoting unity
WE may have changed, but not enough
Not even close to being freed, its still rough
Remove the blinders and open the mind
Society has shackled us over time
Thought processes breeding negativity
As my soul bleeds positiveness positively
Not fighting alone, but very few in number
What God brings together, Man can't put asunder
There's more of us behind bars
Than there are of us being stars
Institutionalized in our thinking
Caught up in societal teachings
Everything that we've become
Is because of what we've done
Pointing fingers and complaining
Will never evoke positive changing
If you want to be treated better, be better
Pick up a book, sit at the feet of elders
Place it in your mind
That you CANNOT sit on the sidelines
That's not good enough anymore
We had such fire in us before
To fight the good fight for freedom
It seems our passion has grown numb
The urgency to exceed got lost in complacency
Which warrants a dormant necessity
Purge away the need for conformity
Pick up your piece of unity
Join in the fight against powers that be
So that we as a people succeed
In living out those dreams deferred
No longer should they be deterred
We hold these truths to be self evident
We even have a black president!
The time has come for us to empower
We MUST take back the power.
I DARE YOU...
~Sagacious
